The Return of the Wellington Village Community Association Newsletter

Good day!

The Wellington Village Community Association has re-started it's virtual newsletter. A while back, a website crash caused the loss of most of our webpage content and tools. It's been a slow recovery, but we are finally back - and then some.

If you have received this note via email it is because you are either a current or former WVCA subscriber! To continue receiving these emails (likely 1-2 per week at the most) simply do nothing and you'll remain on our distribution list. If you'd prefer not receive these emails, please click "unsubscribe" at the bottom of this message.

There is a lot going on in Wellington Village these days, and your community association is working hard to offer you more services.

What do we do? We are here for you as your representatives to help with things like zoning, development applications and Committee of Adjustment concerns; to work with the BIA on helping promote and enhance our local businesses; to provide input to the Councillor's office on local matters such as traffic calming, parking, or other bylaw concerns on behalf of residents; to provide guidance or advice on local planning, environment, heritage or other local matters - either through our own knowledge, or helping to connect you with the right people; to lead or help organize community-building events; and to keep an eye on bigger projects such as the coming Tunney's Pasture development, adding more greenspace, zoning changes, etc.

We have a *new* WVCA Facebook page, which we would love for you to join (https://www.facebook.com/WVCAOTTAWA) and participate in the conversations. Be sure to check out our "Light up the Village" Contest that is going on right now! Decorate your home and nominate your favourite houses in the neighbourhood for a chance to win!

We also have a still relatively new website (http://www.wvca.ca) with a lot of great content worth checking out.

Our board meets monthly to stay on top of the big current issues affecting Wellington Village, such as the Scott Street redevelopment, Tunney's Pasture redevelopment, traffic calming, infills/development, and the city's new Official Plan.

If you have any questions at all, feel free to reach out to our association at president@wvca.ca, or through one of the social media spots listed above!

Wellington Village is an amazing neighbourhood and we are proud to be here for you!

Dave Allston

President, WVCA

Next WVCA Board Meeting: Thursday, November 26 at 7:30 p.m.

Hello Wellington Village!

The WVCA Board is having a second November meeting to continue to build momentum going forward. We will be discussing a handful of issues and updates, but also diving deeper on a few things we are working on to build up membership, clarify our mandate/role, and (hopefully) put on a WVCA-sponsored even or two in the coming months.

As always, everyone is welcome to join our meetings. Since we can no longer meet in person, we'll be meeting online for the foreseeable future. Our next meeting will take place over Google Meet on Thursday, November 26th at 7:30pm.

Cheers!

The future of Scott Street - Webinar 25 November!

From Councillor Jeff Leiper's Newsletter:

Public Meeting: Scott Street Pedestrian, Cycling, Placemaking Update

On Wednesday, Nov. 25, our office will be hosting an online webinar where staff will outline changes coming to Scott Street in the coming years.

With LRT Stage 1 construction behind us and Stage 2 in full swing, Scott Street has and will continue to see many changes. In 2021 construction of the Scott Street bus detour will begin. Once completed, buses will use Scott Street until Stage 2 construction is finished in the Transitway.

Staff in our Transportation Planning department have taken this opportunity to rethink what Scott Street will look like once all the construction is behind us, specifically in terms of pedestrian and cycling facilities and placemaking opportunities. They will be presenting their plan on what Scott Street will look like from the intersection of Churchill through to Bayview Station.

We hope you can join us to see the plan and take part in the conversation.

We (the WVCA) will be attending the meeting, and invite our interested residents to also attend. The Zoom teleconference details can be found at Jeff Leiper's website at:

Next Meeting: Monday, November 2nd at 7:30pm

Hello Wellington Village!

We hope that you're adjusting to the colder temperatures and are cozying up at home. Thank you to those of you who attended our first virtual AGM on October 15th. If you missed it, we had a great turnout with a total of 30 attendees and a very interesting discussion about "change". The meeting began with a presentation from the WVCA on who we are, what we've done and our vision for the future. We also discussed membership (for more information please refer to our last post about how you can join or maintain your membership by sending a donation via Paypal or e-transfer) and elected a new Board. We explained to attendees that due to some members of the Board moving out of the neighbourhood, we are in need to fill important positions on the Board. Attendees also heard from guest speakers Jeff Leiper and Dennis Van Staaduinen on the changes we've seen and will continue to see in our neighbourhood, in our ward and in our city. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected many of our local businesses and we encourage residents to do what they can to continue to show them our support. Although Joel Harden wasn't able to join us in the end, he sent his regrets by way of a video message.

Even though we elected our Board for 2020/2021, we are always in need of active members who are eager to work on issues so please contact us if you are interested in specific topics or if you have any questions for us. To contact the WVCA please send us an email at: president@wvca.ca.

As always, everyone is welcome to join our meetings. Since we can no longer meet in person, we'll be meeting online for the foreseeable future. Our next meeting will take place over Google Meets on Monday, November 2nd at 7:30pm.

In addition to discussing issues concerning the neighbourhood we'll be selecting people to fill vacant Board positions including the following: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Webmaster. We hope to see you next Monday. To join, please click on the link below:

Membership fees help support the Wellington Village Community Association!

Membership fees go a long way in helping the WVCA operate!

The Wellington Village Community Association (WVCA) represents residents who live in the area from Scott Street to the Queensway, and Island Park to Holland Avenue. When you become a member of the WVCA, your voting right provides you with a voice in the growth, development and maintenance of your community. The WVCA Board meets regularly (approximately once a month) to stay informed about ongoing issues. All members are invited to attend these meetings.

The WVCA has a website, distributes an electronic newsletter to members, and sends out timely emails when items of concern or interest to the community arise.

The WVCA also sponsors periodic forums about specific issues in the community. Your dues are put towards the cost of running these events. The suggested membership fee is a very nominal cost to ensure the Wellington Village community continues to be one of the most desirable places to live in all of Ottawa.

Membership is only $5 per year (though a $10 contribution for a two-year membership is encouraged!).

To become a member you have two options to pay membership fees:

1) You can send an e-transfer to president@wvca.ca; or

2) You can send a payment using Paypal! Click the button below to make your contribution!

Upon payment, you will receive a confirmation email back from the President of the WVCA confirming your membership in the WVCA!
